Characterization and modulation of brain lipids content of rainbow trout fed with 100% plant based diet rich in omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids DHA and EPA.

Brain functions are known to be mainly modulated by adequate dietary intake. Inadequate intake as can be an excess or significant deficiency affect cognitive processes, behavior, neuroendocrine functions and synaptic plasticity with protective or harmful effects on neuronal physiology. Lipids, in particular, ω-6 and ω-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) play structural roles and govern the different functions of the brain.

Factors associated with participation in a short-term dietary intervention study among patients with established coronary artery disease: insights from the EVADE CAD trial.

Optimal management of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) includes a heart healthy diet. We evaluated associations between patient characteristics with the decision to enroll in a dietary intervention study. The EVADE CAD trial was a randomized trial assessing the impact of eight weeks of a vegan versus AHA-recommended diet on inflammatory and glucometabolic profiles in patients with angiographically-defined CAD.

Associations between dietary patterns and gene expression pattern in peripheral blood mononuclear cells: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diet may alter gene expression in immune cells involved in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease susceptibility. However, we still lack a robust understanding of the association between diet and immune cell-related gene expression in humans. Therefore, we examined associations between dietary patterns (DPs) and gene expression profiles in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in a population of healthy, Norwegian adults (n = 130 women and 105 men).

Influence of Substrate Age and Interspecific Colonization on Oviposition Behavior of a Generalist Feeder, Black Soldier Fly (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), on Carrion.

Variation in resource utilization plays a significant role in determining the success or failure of a species. Generalist species across numerous taxa have exhibited success in feeding strategies for a variety of reasons. This study investigated the colonization and oviposition habits of a generalist carrion-feeder, Hermetia illucens L. (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), to varying conditions of carrion decay and colonization. Oviposition treatments consisted of combinations of variably aged decaying rats, both uncolonized and colonized with a heterospecific carrion-feeder.

Examining vegetarianism, weight motivations, and eating disorder psychopathology among college students.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has suggested a link between vegetarianism, broadly defined, and symptoms of eating disorders (ED). However, the literature supporting this link is mixed and limited by possible measurement artifacts. Using data from a national sample of college students, the present study examines ED symptomatology among three groups: (a) vegetarians whose meat avoidance is motivated by weight concerns; (b) non-weight motivated vegetarians; and (c) nonvegetarians.

Vegetarian and Vegan Weaning of the Infant: How Common and How Evidence-Based? A Population-Based Survey and Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Vegetarian and vegan weaning have increasing popularity among parents and families. However, if not correctly managed, they may lead to wrong feeding regimens, causing severe nutritional deficiencies requiring specific nutritional support or even the need for hospitalization. AIM: To assess the prevalence of vegetarian and vegan weaning among Italian families and to provide an up-to-date narrative review of supporting evidence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated 360 Italian families using a 40-item questionnaire.

Nanoliposomal encapsulation mediated enhancement of betalain stability: Characterisation, storage stability and antioxidant activity of Basella rubra L. fruits for its applications in vegan gummy candies.

Betalains are violet-red, natural food grade pigments with health benefits; however, their stability limits its use in industrial food processing. This can be overcome by placing the betalains in lecithin nanoliposomes (NLs), which causes a 76% improvement of betalain colour and stability. Extended sonication time (8 min) lowered the zeta potential (-47.5 to -40.8), and particle size (74.23 to 55.35 nm). Zeta potential, particle size, and polydispersity index of Betalain NLs (BNLs) didn't change significantly during storage (40 days).
